Recently adopted a cat or kitten? Congratulations! Your life is about to change for the better. Cats are majestic and have no trouble asking for what they need. However, responsible cat owners know what they need before they ask for it.

There is an ocean of cat products out there but it’s NEVER about a brand or a single product. It is about what your cat needs and how that product can fulfill it.

Every Cat household should have the following:

1. Shallow (non-plastic) bowl x2
2. A scratch post (chosen by the cat)
3. Vertical and/or Hiding Spaces
4. Enriching Cat toys
5. Litter-box (this will be covered more in-depth in the next article)

Multi-cat households should have more resources than the number of cats.

The right shopping list can be a blessing and I'm going to show you how to listen to the meows. Their needs are simple but it's the details that make all the difference. For example, cats generally have multiple small meals rather than 3 large meals. Based on your feeding schedule you will probably notice leftover food or meowing for food many times day and night. They also don't like their whiskers touching the side of the bowl. Some cats tolerate this more than others but if your cat is scooping the food, now you know why. So get a shallow small sized bowl for meals. Cats also prefer their water bowl far away from their food bowl. Your cat is always telling you what he/she needs. If you take note of your cat's preferences you can get a happy cat and your money's worth.

**Safety, Security and of course, Nap time.**

Vertical spaces and hiding spaces are non-negotiable. Before you get a cat, clear space above a fridge, cupboard or shelf. Kittens might need a stepping stool nearby. Having a cat means having a little hunter who needs to see the world from the safety of a tree or bush. If you cannot plant a full-grown tree in your living room, there are some practical alternatives.

Place it in a safe corner or higher up on a cupboard/fridge/desk. You can also use it as a warmer alternative to sitting on your laptop. The golden rule is NEVER to disturb a sleeping cat. If you pet your cat up during a nap, this reduces the safety of that spot.

If you have a warmer room, your cat will want a cooler alternative. **Pro tip:** Never use food to get a cat to use a scratch post or hold the cat's paws to try and scratch that area yourself. This can result in an aversion towards that area and harm your cat.

Scratching is actually a need rather than a hobby. The purpose of scratching and bunting (the gesture of rubbing the head/cheeks on an object or person) is to deposit pheromones. Pheromones are olfactory communication for cats that help a cat relax in its territory. If your cat scratches in front of you, he/she feels happy and confident to do so. Your cat's scratching isn't bad behaviour at all which means you cannot and SHOULD NOT punish a cat by spraying water or shaking a can of coins. Even though this is a 'need' there is no need to redecorate your furniture. When your cat doesn't use the scratch post you bought it's because he/she is telling you it's not the one. Don't you want to help them find true love?

**Stability:** Scratch posts that are lightweight or oddly shaped will move when scratched and spook your cat. This is why they tend to scratch sofas, door frames and anything sturdy.

**Location:** Cats tend to scratch where they sleep and they stretch when they wake up. This keeps their muscles in tip-top shape.

**Pro Tip:** Look at your cat's preference for features instead of objects. E.g. Stability, location, horizontal/vertical instead of a cardboard box, sofa or cat tree.

**Enriching toys**

When your cat is not sleeping or grooming they will be playing. Human-cat playtime needs interactive play that mimics hunting and food puzzles for exploration. When we domesticated cats over the years, we bargained with them. They would grace us with their presence but we would provide them with an outlet for all their predatory needs. They need at least 20 minutes of active & interactive play per day. This means adding movement, dimming the lights of the room, giving them places to stalk from like curtains, cardboard boxes or cat appropriate tunnels like FOFOs Cat Boy Tunnel. The key to interactive play is exclusivity. This means all these things ONLY come out during playtime and that's what makes them so special.

Tiny toys always win because you can tie them to a string and they just come alive. I find the size of FOFO's Tiny Twin Mouse (pack of 2) serve the purpose. Food puzzles teach the cat to manipulate their environment to get food. It could be as simple as pawing some kibble out of an empty egg carton or it could be complex like retrieving food from a hanging bottle with a hole in it. Studies show that puzzles improve welfare, boost confidence and reduce behaviour issues. Food bowl feeding has little to no effect on your cat well being. **Litter Box and cat chosen litter**

Security in the home comes from highlighting the right smell and covering up the potentially harmful ones. This means properly covering the odour with a litter that has fine granules and clumps well. The litter box needs to be 1.5 times the size of the cat and should be cleaned daily or twice a day in a multi-cat household. I could go on and on about the location of the box, open or closed, types of litter, litter box satisfaction etc but we will dive deeper into a litter box (a clean one) in the next article.

Regardless of whether you have a cat already or you plan to get one... the top 5 things are just as important as the details about how they have to be implemented. All creatures eat but a fish would eat differently from a lion. A deep understanding of our species can help our cats thrive rather than just survive.


How to shop for your cat?


Let me paint you a picture; you are travelling with your dog in your car. The sky is clear, the wind is rising, and the roads are empty for the most part. You are focussed on the road whilst your dog is in the back, unleashed and confused, tagging along for the ride. There is a soft swerve, the car rumbles under the gravel of the road; there is a brief panic that falls over you and you immediately check up on your dog. Your dog is fine but rattled. You slowly resume driving; concerned and grateful.

All pets, canine and feline, need a pet carrier that supports them and keeps them intact while going on a long trip. Let's just keep that as a standard of pet care. Pet Carriers for dogs come in different shapes and forms. Cutesy, soft pet carriers for teacup dogs, pet backpack carriers for Persian cats; different breeds, different forms. The question still stays though; why pet carriers?

A Pets Carrier is as important as the pet itself. Take the example of cats; cats love an enclosed space. A vestigial from the time of being hunters out in the wild, they make them feel safe and secure. So a pet carrier is the next eventual step. ## Rules and Regulations for Pet Carriers.

Okay so now you’re ready for the trip; you’ve got your pet care and hygiene, and you’ve got your pet carrier. But there is one more step one should know about before going on a six-legged adventure; Rules and regulations for a safe way of passage on general transport. Every mode of travel has its fair share of rules.

#### For Road,

The first question one should ask is whether it is necessary to take my pet on vacation.

- Get a suitable pet carrier (hopefully the one we swear by) with loops and belts to fasten it along with the seatbelts.
- Getting used to the pets carrier is very important for a road trip. The pet should be used in the interior of a vehicle.
- Water and other on-the-go snacks should be on hand for a quick slurp/nom-nom session.
- Plan your trip accordingly with pets in mind for bathroom/potty times.

#### For Planes,

AirIndia allows a maximum of two pets are allowed for in the cabin per flight, in proper, well-ventilated bags/kennels with a soft absorbent mat inside whilst the pet, dogs in particular, being muzzled and leashed.

- There should be a valid rabies certificate for the pet you are travelling with. Also, due consideration is given to up-to-date vaccination cards.
- Properly ventilated carriers.
- The pet carrier size should not exceed above 18” x 18” x 12” and the carrier weight should not exceed 5 kg.

#### For Trains,

Indian Railways have much consideration for travelling pets provided that.

- The food and water are taken care of by the owner themselves.
- The owner should be carrying, at all times, proper leashes and collars for the pet in question.
- After the initial booking, you are to contact the Chief Commercial Officer, letting them know that you are travelling with a pet so that you are allotted a coupe or a cabin rather than any random berths.
- You need to provide the latest vaccination certificate for your dog.
- Carry valid ID proof of your identity with you.
- Pay the required fees. Get the receipt. Submit the first part of the receipt to the train guard and keep the other part with you.
- A guard coach is usually located at the tail end of a train. Don't forget to get your dog off the train at the destination station by submitting the receipt to the guard.

Travelling with pets can be hectic as possible, but it doesn’t have to be if you tackle all the eventual obstacles and are in due process of the law, rules and regulations. Also to reiterate what is said above; ask yourself a question as to whether your pet needs to travel. A pet carrier can take your pet anywhere, only if your pet is interested. Taking your pet out of a climate/environment can raise my problems, being prepared in advance is what it takes to be a good paw-parent.

**Devendra: **I know that in some pet-friendly resorts, pets aren’t allowed inside the rooms — provision is made for them downstairs in kennels. But pets can roam freely in our pet-friendly villas. They aren’t allowed in the bathrooms and the homeowner may have some specifications like not allowing them in the pool. In some homes, owners do not mind having pets in the pool as long as guests are willing to pay cleaning charges. We take the owners’ preference into consideration.

**Team BB: **What are the things that pet-parents need to arrange for the pets, versus what do you provide?
**Devendra: **We can tend to requests for curd-rice or boiled chicken for the pets at an additional cost. However, we have observed that pet-parents often carry food for the pets, themselves. We understand that each pet has a different need and requirement. While we do offer food, the pets’ bedding has to be arranged by guests themselves.

**Team BB: **What’s the procedure for booking for pets and at what point in the booking are pet-parents supposed to inform that they are bringing pets along?
**Devendra: **We need to be informed right at the start of the booking to help the on-site staff be better prepared about whether it is a dog or a cat, and which breed they belong to. However, sometimes it so happens that bringing along pets is a last-minute decision. In that case, they can pay the extra charges on-site, online.

**Team BB: **Lastly, would you have any tips for those traveling with pets? What should they take care of to have a pleasant stay at SaffronStays?
**Devendra: **Basic pet-parent etiquette and understanding is all that’s needed. The property may have resident pets and the staff may be slightly unsure of how to interact with guest pets at first. Having them on a leash for the starting few minutes is nice. It would also be helpful if their nails are trimmed, so that they don’t accidentally scratch someone while playfully jumping up on them. And lastly, pet owners need to be careful that pets do not harm the personal belongings, artefacts and furnishings at the villa; most of them have sentimental value, are exclusive and expensive.

The past few years have seen a remarkable increase in the number of pet-parents turning to professional dog groomers to wash and beautify their floofs. Team BarkButler reached out to a prominent figure in this industry which is worth almost Rs. 100 crores in India. Here are excerpts from the conversation with **Ms. Poonam Thaval **from **White Collar Pet Spa **in Mumbai.

**Team BB: **Tell us a little about the events that lead you to this field of work.
**Poonam: **I had been doing a corporate media job for about 8 years when one day, I decided to leave that life behind. My husband asked me what my one true passion was. My answer instantly was “dogs”. I had a retirement plan in place, one of owning a house in Goa one day that was filled with 30 dogs- one for each day of the month! My husband was of the opinion that I needed not wait till I retire to be with something that I loved. So, veterinary was not an option since I am a commerce graduate and I have an MBA. Pet training and boarding services did not fascinate me as I am artistic and creative. I gravitated to dog grooming like a moth to a flame and enrolled myself in international certified courses almost immediately.

**Team BB: **What were your first steps into this industry?
**Poonam: **I found myself a mentor in this industry- Janvi Apte Kothari. I took my first steps in dog grooming here and then travelled to Thailand, China and Taiwan where I studied pet grooming. I also won international pet grooming competitions. Currently, I am waiting to complete my A-Levels education in grooming in Japan which will make me eligible to judge grooming competitions globally!

**Team BB: **Could you shed some light on your pet salon (The White Collar) and how business has grown over the years?
**Poonam: **I started The White Collar in 2013, after having worked with Janvi and gotten education in the field. I have noticed that the pet care market has grown by more than 20% over the past 6–7 years. While the pet industry in India has grown to a 1000–1200 crore one, pet grooming alone has come to account for almost 100 crores out of that. I have been seeing a heavy and consistent growth in the spa’s footfall over the years.

**Team BB: **What would you attribute the growth of this industry to?
**Poonam: **The main reason why the dog grooming world is expanding in India is that the number of dog-pets has been steadily increasing. This has been happening because of the rise of veganism and animal welfare, as well as couples opting for family structures that include a dog in it, as opposed to a human child. With education and exposure, couples such as my husband and myself believe in the freedom of choice of every individual and we are comfortable having just a furry baby. With this the case, a truth also is that everyone is working really hard and is always on-the-go. This is where us pet groomers come into play and it’s why this profession is booming.

**Team BB:** What is the procedure that is followed once a dog comes into the spa?**
Poonam: **We first take the details of the dog from their humans. We as if they have any skin/shampoo allergies and ask the clients if there are any concerns that they want to share with us. After that, the dog goes into the spa, to our head bather. He has an experience of 11 years in this field. He recommends a shampoo for the dog depending on his/her skin. The dog is then passed on to whichever bather is available to give the dog a bath. Post this, the junior-groomers come into play, who dry the dog. Then, senior-groomers give the dog regular hair trims or stylised haircuts. The clients’ word comes first here, but we too make suggestions of what is needed to be done when we inspect the dog.

**Team BB: **What other services do you provide along with bathing and hair-cutting?
**Poonam: **When we bathe a dog, we also do teeth brushing, ear cleaning and nail cutting. A special we offer is therapeutic massages for dogs where we use essential oils for issues like joint-ache, skin issues, anxiety in dogs, anti-tick massages. We use different essential oils for different remedies. We also do temporary and permanent hair colouring.

**Team BB: **Can you shed some light on basic pet grooming for different breeds?**
Poonam: **In India, unfortunately, not many groomers know how to groom exotic breeds. I’ve had owners of a Chow Chow who had once gotten their dog completely shaved, on the recommendation of a groomer. And you should NEVER completely shave a Chow Chow as they can get an autoimmune illness. Then, there is something known as a Standard Breed Groom. For example, a poodle is supposed to look a certain way. In that as well, there is a Continental Groom and a Stand Breed Groom. I specialise in grooming Chow Chows, Poodles, Yorkshires and the more common breeds.

**Team BB: **What can customers expect to pay to avail this service?
**Poonam: **The cost of our services start from Rs. 1300 and go on to Rs. 4000.

**Team BB: **What are some of the obstacles you face in this field of work?
**Poonam: **People don’t understand the skill of this job. It might look like we bathed a dog and returned him/her to the owner. But this also includes proper shampoo selection and implementation of proper bathing and drying techniques. Our country, unfortunately, isn’t used to luxury spending yet and this poses a hurdle as we have to keep justifying our charges.

**Team BB: **How often do you think dogs need bathing?
**Poonam: **In Mumbai city specifically, because of the humidity and high pollution levels, I recommend a bath every week. In a European city, once a month would do. And every hairy dog (shih tzu, lhasa apso, cocker spaniel, golden retriever) should get a basic groom every 15 days. Their hair under the paws and in other areas needs to be trimmed so that they can live a comfortable life.

**Team BB: **Have you been in business during these COVID-19 times and what precautions have you been taking?
**Poonam: **Yes, we have been working non-stop in these times. One thing to mention first here is that dogs cannot get COVID-19, but they can be carriers. So we do not accept anything that comes with the dog- their leashes, collars etc. We take the dog in with our own leashes. This is to maintain the contactless transfer. We have made a bath mandatory before any grooming begins, as we don’t know where the dog has come from. Our goal is to keep our clients and our on-ground team safe.

**Team BB: **Finally, what do you see in the future of The White Collar?
**Poonam: **Opening more branches in Mumbai and outside.

Whether the travel is for recreational purposes or for medical/emergency purposes — convincing taxi drivers/owners/rental companies to let floofs ride is a herculean task because of many factors. Cleanliness is the first reason that is mentioned. You say you’ll make the pets sit on the footboard, that you will make them sit on a bedsheet/in a box. You offer to personally clean after the ride too — to no avail!

In a country that also doesn’t allow pets on public transport without special permits, animal rescuer **Laxmi Agarwal **took matters in her own hand in the year 2016. She found the solution to many people’s problem in the form of **Pet Taxi** - a pet friendly cab service**! **Team BarkButler sat down with her for a chat.

**Team BB: **Tell us a little about Pet Taxi and the events that gave you the idea to have a taxi for pets.
**Laxmi: **I am an animal rescuer who often has to take animals to a vet. Till a few years ago, transporting an animal from one place to another used to always be a problem. Many taxis would blatantly refuse and the need for dog friendly cabs was apparent. Those that did take me and the animal would charge exorbitantly and despite this, not switch on the air-conditioning. My experiences convinced me to start a service which provided affordable travel with pets- a pet cab! We started with travel within Mumbai in 2016. By 2018, we had started transport from Mumbai to all over India.

**Team BB: **How has the Pet Taxi service grown as a business since its inception?
**Laxmi: **At first, it used to be just my driver and myself providing this service. Today, I have over 100 vendors doing this task and the number of pet transport vehicles is increasing every single day. We have now made _200+_ outstation trips from Mumbai. We have made journeys from the Nepal border to Kanyakumari as well. I personally travel in the taxi with the pets if the owners choose to fly to the destination themselves. Our business has, over the years, expanded. Recently I have started **_PAN INDIA _**outstation booking where your pets can travel to and from any part of India.

**Team BB: Could you shed some light on the taxi-booking procedure?
Laxmi: **We operate mainly on _WhatsApp_ . Customers can either text me or call me to make their booking for pet pick up and drop off. We are also available on Facebook and Instagram. Our taxis reach them less than 90 minutes after the booking is made.

**Team BB: What is the cost of Pet Taxi?
Laxmi: **We charge _Rs. 14/km_ for pet friendly outstation cabs that are AC Sedans. Additionally, there are driver allowance charges and pet-handling charges. For within-city commute, we charge on lump sum basis with the minimum billing of Rs. 1000.

**Team BB: What are some of the obstacles you face in this field of work?
Laxmi: **Justifying the rates to customers who compare them to human taxis, is difficult. The pricing model of those taxis works very differently from ours as we clean our taxis after each commute. The charges for the said cleaning are in themselves, Rs. 300. There are many cases where owners like to go for outstation trips with pets, but prefer to themselves fly while the pet travels in a cab. In such a situation, the pet’s food, walks and wellbeing are our responsibility. This isn’t an obstacle, of course, but we worry and take utmost care from the start to the end of the journey.

**Team BB: Do you have any tips with regards to road journey with pets?
Laxmi: **Do not feed the pet for as many hours as possible before a road journey. Our parental feelings convince us that they should eat, but one must resist this urge. Avoiding food before travel reduces occurrences of motion sickness in animals.

**Team BB: Have you been in business during these COVID-19 times?**
**Laxmi: **Yes, we have been working non-stop to reunite pets with their owners in these times. As a dog transport service in India that has been function during these times, we have made trips with pets to Kochi, Goa, Delhi, Rishikesh, Chikmanglur, Hyderabad and more places in the past few months.

**Team BB: Finally, what do you see in the future of Pet Taxi?**
**Laxmi: **Expansion. _Pet Taxi Mumbai_ is currently pretty functional in Bangalore too, but the goal is to reach to more cities and help out more pets and their owners.

She wasn’t always like this. Chloe had seen a few dark things at the testing laboratory of a major pharmaceutical company. She was rescued from this dwelling in 2010. The dark times had made Chloe a weak, reserved, and easily frightened 4-year old Beagle.

Chloe, after being rescued, was most comfortable taking cover under a table, and other inconspicuous places; she had little or no resemblance to a healthy dog. With love, effort, and time, Chloe has transformed.

She is now, Miss Chloe, of House Sleepsalot, Master of Dreams, Breaker of Treat Bags, Digger of Dirt and the True Queen of our Hearts.

The story of transformation of Miss Chloe into a happy and healthy puppy, who steals our heart every day, is a happy one. Nothing sets her tail wagging, with vigour, like food. When we recognized this, we indulged her in a variety of treat, bones, and chews from the colourful pup-market. It was chance that led us to scrutinise the list of ingredients on these packages. The toxic substances for dogs came in various forms and in products of many major brands. There was glycerine, a petrochemical product containing methanol, difficult to digest wheat, soy & corn filled products, and noxious synthetic preservatives, and colours. The aesthetic value of the products was, at many occasions, a cover up for low quality ingredients and these would require allergy-inducing flavour enhancers to complement the product. Perils of inferior manufacturing extended to toys, through usage of toxic chemicals and inconsiderate assembling of parts, which presented the menace of choking. This woke us to the dangers and risks that dog-owners are putting their pets at, while being unaware.

Miss Chloe, meanwhile, was demanding that her tail revert to the wagging that it was used to, and this got us busy looking for credible products. And, BINGO! There were products in the market which were tasty, healthy, and pet-friendly.
